Athenas Volleyball Tamed by the Tigers
The CMS Volleyball team lost its first match in conference play Saturday night when it fell to the Occidental College Tigers in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-20). Despite tallying 5 more kills than the home team, the Athenas were shortchanged by the combined efforts of Oxy's outside hitters and middle attack. Down just 2 points in set one, CMS gave up a 6 point run to fall behind 22-16. The team rallied back to and trailed 23-24 but a costly hitting error gave Oxy the final point.
The Athenas went ahead 4-0 in set 2 before the Tigers recovered and the teams traded points for the entirety of the second set before the Occidental offense picked up and notched 3 kills in the final 4 points to secure the win.
CMS never fell into a rhythm in set three and trailed 13-20 before fighting back to 20-24. It was too little too late and the Tigers hit a final kill to take the match.
The Athenas were led offensively by outside hitter, Emily Hudson (Jr., So. Pasadena, CA) who finished with 14 kills and a serving ace. She was aided by fellow outside hitter, senior Kendra Huff (Downey, CA) who picked up 9 kills and a team high 19 digs. Libero, Shalynn Ho (So., Mililani, HI) had 16 digs and sophomore setter, Taylor Jones (Scottsdale, AZ) led both teams with 34 assists.
CMS Volleyball (9-3 overall) continues SCIAC play as they begin a tough three game series this Tuesday. The Athenas will play host to the University of Redlands (7:30 pm) before travelling to Cal Lutheran University (7:30 pm) on Friday and the University of La Verne (6:00 pm) on Saturday.
