THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team toughed out another five set match in the NCAA Regional on Friday, this time against Colorado College for the 3-2 win (25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-13). The Athenas were down two sets to one and forced a fifth set by minimizing errors and coming up with timely blocks in the fourth set.
With their backs against the wall in the fourth, CMS stepped up to the moment and thrived under the pressure. Senior Regina Mullen (CMC), who had six kills in the set, was finding space down the line from the left side. Freshman Sarah Bruml (CMC) did not have her best day for hitting percentage but assisted with three blocks early in the set to get the Athenas the initial advantage. Freshman Margaux Arntson (CMC), who had a career day yesterday, had a few cross court kills into the back corner in the fourth set as well.
Despite leading by about four points throughout the first set, CMS had some trouble closing it out. The Colorado College Tigers capitalized on Athena errors late in the set but CMS was steadied by head coach Kurt Vlasich in a perfectly timed timeout. The Athenas forced an attack error on the next point to win the set.
Colorado College was aggressive and successful at the net. Kaimara Herron for CC assisted with seven blocks during the match and setter Rebecca Watson surprised CMS with a handful of well placed attacks on the second hit.
The Athenas worked from behind for most of the fifth set, eventually tying the game at 9-9. Similar to yesterday' win, junior Audrey Breitwieser (CMC) played like a seasoned upperclassman and nailed home four kills in the final set, including the last point.
For the second night in a row, senior libero Megan Coleman (CMC) had at least a 40 dig match. This is only the third game this season for such a feat.
Last year in the NCAA tournament, Colorado College was ultimately the team that eliminated CMS. Tonight, the Athenas proved their growth from last season and worthiness to be in the national tournament with the big comeback win over the CC Tigers.
CMS is now 26-6 on the season and advances to the NCAA Regional Final to face the winner of the other semi-final match between Cal Lutheran and Trinity.
