CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the final home game of the 2015 regular season, the No. 10 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team took care of business against Chapman in three sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-18). This marked the 23rd win for the Athenas in the 2015 campaign as sophomore Margaux Arntson (CMC) led all players hitting .550 in the match.
Tonight's match also was Senior Night for the Athenas' lone senior, Tanner Hoke (CMC). Hoke will graduate as the winningest player in CMS history with 91 wins so far. After tonight's match, she has tallied 1941 assists and 637 digs in her career.
CMS got off to an uncharacteristically slow start in the first set, allowing Chapman to hang around which included two Panther service aces. The Athenas still remained in control with a couple point lead before a kill by sophomore Sarah Bruml (SCR) sealed the set during Clara Madsen's (CMC) serve.
The second set saw longer points as both teams rallied to pick up the pace of the game. Sophomore Shelbi Stein (CMC) and Arntson each had three kills in the set, foreshadowing how explosive they would both be in the final set.
Egged on by a rowdy group of Stags, Arntson registered six kills in the third set without committing an error and Stein ended up with ten kills on the night with just two errors.
Sophomore libero Mikena Werner (SCR) had a game-high 15 digs, consistent with her 5.13 digs per set average on the season.
The Athenas sit tied for first place in SCIAC with Cal Lutheran going into the final regular season matches tomorrow. CMS (13-2 SCIAC) travels to Redlands (2-13 SCIAC) while Cal Lu (13-2) is at Pomona-Pitzer (7-7).
