The CMS Women's Water Polo team graduated seven players after the 2010 season, including two All-SCIAC players. Nonetheless, the Athenas look to be competitive this season with the addition of some some impressive talent, in the form of four freshmen, and a returning line up that includes five seniors, five juniors and two sophomores.
The SCIAC conference season looks to be an exciting one. The Collegiate Water Polo pre-season rankings have SCIAC teams taking the first six spots. CMS is ranked 5th, above Whittier College and below Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer, University of Redlands and Cal Lutheran University. The conference has some incredible talent and it will be exciting to see how the Athenas will do.
The Athenas started their 2011 pre-season in February at the Cal Baptist Invite. On February 4th CMS defeated Cal St. San Bernadino in their first game 7-5, but fell to Concordia 11-9 later that day. The next day CMS was cruised past Vanguard 15-3 and was defeated by Cal St. Northridge 12-5.
The following weekend the Athenas travelled to Bucknell to compete in the Bison Invite and finished 3-2. They were beat Wagner 14-4, narrowly defeated Siena 14-2 and lost to Bucknell 11-7, Mercyhurst 11-9 and Wagner 14-4.
CMS rounded out February with a non-conference game against Redlands. The Athenas lost in overtime to Redlands in a close 12-10 match. This game just proves how competitive the SCIAC season is bound to be this spring.
