The 2011 Convergence tournament was the first step in what should be a very successful season. With four opponents over the weekend, two from the West Coast - Chapman and Azusa Pacific -and two from the East Coast - St. Francis and Chatham - the women's team looked to have their hands full.
In the first game against Chapman the Athena's fell victim to a lack of scoring with only a two goal lead going into half time. The second half began with a bang as the team rattled off five goals in a row. A nail bitter first half became a controlled game in the second half due to great team offense and defense. Key contributors in this game were Alex Toohey (FR, Lafayette), who added six goals on offense and a handful of steals, Candace Filippelli (FR, Rancho Cucamonga), who gained three goals and five drawn ejections, and finally Jenny Ward (SR, Davis), who added three goals and controlled the defense. The real star off the game was Athenas goal keeper Abby Woodruff (SR, Davis) who took it upon herself to build a wall in front of the cage. Although the game was close in score that was not because of a lack of blocks, Abby had 14 blocks in the game three of which were one on nobody and another that was a penalty shot.
The next game of the weekend would be a good test for the Athenas because they had lost to Azusa Pacific just two weeks earlier. This game was the toughest of the weekend and started out in a familiar way. Just as the last test between the two had started, the Athenas began the game down 3-1. The team quickly called a timeout and received a firm speech by their coach Greg Lonzo. Whatever was said in this talk seemed to work because within just five minutes the team was up 6-4. The game continued in the Athenas favor as they climbed to a 9-5 lead. The momentum was a balanced team effort that showed key goals from Jeanne Kelber (SO, Carlsbad) and Alyssa Filippelli (FR, Rancho Cucamonga). Although the lead was narrowed to 10-8 by the end, it was clear that the Athenas were the favorable opponent.
The third game of the weekend was expected to be the highlight game of the east coast teams, but what started out as a close game turned into a CMS blowout. The Athenas dominated their opponent, Saint Francis, on offense and defense. The Athenas scored 8 unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead 10-2 at half and cruised to a 13-6 victory. The Athenas balanced attack struck again as seven different Athenas scored goals including freshman Kelly Davis (1) (Los Gatos), Kristina Norrgard (1) (JR, Greenwich, CT), Jenny Ward (3), Candace Filippelli (2), Alyssa Filippelli (1), Jeanie Keiber (2), and Alex Toohey (3). The win will most certainly be a huge milestone in the 2011 campaign.
The final game off the weekend was against Chatam, and the Athens started the game with sophomore goal keeper Heather Williams (Ventura). Heather played a great game with 11 blocks and two assists. The game again was a team effort that showed a high scoring attack for the home team and minimal damage on defense. The Athenas won the game 19-3 to cap off a 4-0 weekend.
