Fast Times For Cross Country Teams At UC Riverside

The men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished ninth at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday with the men scoring 266 points and the women scoring 282.  Both teams finished a close second in scoring among non-Division I teams.  The men scored 87 points to NAIA #12 Cal State San Marcos’ 85 and the women scored 75 points to NAIA #2 San Marcos’ 72.  The women’s competition consisted of an invitational race in which the Athenas ran seven runners and an open race in which the rest of the team competed.  CMS finished third in the open race behind Loyola Marymount and San Marcos.

In the invitational race, the Athenas were led by Jennifer Tavé (JR, St. Germain, France) who finished 29th overall in 17:49.0.  The time was a personal best and is fourth best in CMS history.  The other four scorers for CMS were Julia Rigby (JR, Tustin) 50th in 18.08.8, Alison Gushue (JR, Tustin) 64th in 18:16.4, Kerrin Smith (FR, Dover, MA) 79th in 18:21.1 and Marnie Hogue (SO, Mercer Island, WA [pictured]) 79th in 18:27.0.  Gushue, Smith and Hogue set personal bests as did Adele Eslinger (FR, Edmonds, WA) 18:58.4 and Laura Wyatt (SO, La Jolla) 18:58.7.  In the open race, the Athenas were led by Allison Barnwell (FR, Seward, AK) who finished 20th in 18:56.6.  Also scoring in this race were Aubrey Zimmerling (SO, Lakewood, CO) 23rd in 19:03.6, Emery Hilles (JR, Eugene, OR) 35th in 19:34.3, Isabel Bush (JR, Juneau, AK) 51st in 19:54.7 and Elise Yoshida (SO, ) 60th in 20:14.0.  Personal bests were set by Barnwell, Hilles as well as Alexa Teevens (JR, Pembroke, MA) 20:21.3, Lisa Beem (FR, Seattle, WA) 20:28.2, Lily Brown (SR, Newton, MA) 21:10.1, Sibee Jokela (FR, Watford City, ND) 21:11.9, Alisse Baumgarten (SO, Gold River) 21:20.1, Rebecca Ciszewski (FR, Orangevale) 22:00.4, Mackenzie Ruoff (SO, Yarrow Point, WA) 22:28.6 and Hilary Haskell (FR, Orange) 23:38.7.  This race marked the first time in CMS history that more than five women broke 19:00 for five kilometers.  The performance of the meet went to Hogue who improved her personal best by 55 seconds after improving it by 56 seconds the week before.

The Stags were led by Brian Sutter (SO, Monroe, WA) who finished 39th in 25:07.3.  The remaining scorers for the Stags were Kris Brown (SR, Seattle, WA) 50th in 25:15.6, Georgi Dinolov (SR, Santa Cruz) 80th in 25:48.9, Bryan Chow (JR, Livermore) 84th in 25:53.1 and Quinn Chasan (SO, Mercer Island, WA [pictured]) 86th in 25:54.7.  Personal bests were set by Sutter, Brown, Chasan as well as Julian Martinez (JR, Santa Barbara) 26:14.8, Tyler Robinson (FR, San Diego) 26:17.9, Bennett Naden (SO, Middleton, WI) 26:21.1, Brian Conroy (SO, Sierra Madre) 27:14.9, Russell Page (SO, Albuquerque, NM) 27:20.3, Kevin Potterton (JR, Needham, MA) 28:21.6, Tim Baffi (SO, Moraga) 27:23.1, Jonathan Briskman (FR, Lake Forest, IL) 27:32.1, Colin Briskman (FR, Lake Forest, IL) 27:38.0, Dan Evans (JR, Missoula, MT) 28:09.9, Adam Parower (FR, Latham, NY) 28:25.5, Nelson Gil (SR, Los Angeles) 29:11.4 and Tom Guo (SO, Pretoria, South Africa) 32:25.2.

CMS will travel with their top 12 men and women to Minneapolis, MN this week for the Roy Griak Invitational.  The meet is one of the major meets in the country and features several nationally ranked teams.  The Stags and Athenas are both ranked first in the West Region and will look to improve on their national rankings.  In the latest poll, the men are ranked 14th and the women are ranked 18th (new rankings are released each Wednesday). The women will run at 9:00 (Central) and the men will run at 10:40.
