Athena 7-0, Stags 5-2 At SCIAC Multi-Duals

The fourth ranked Athena cross country team dominated the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet on Saturday with five runners among the first seven finishers.  The 30th ranked Stags, despite having the deepest team, did not have enough runners up front and finished third.

The women raced first and quickly showed why they are one of the top teams in the country.  The trio of Jennifer Tavé, Breanna Deutsch and Laura Sauvage led for the first half of the race and finished second, fourth and seventh respectively.  Adele Eslinger had her best race as an Athena and finished fifth overall in 22:48.  Last year at this race on the same course, she finished 23rd in 23:37.  Eslinger was followed closely by roommate Allison Barnwell in sixth.  CMS had five more finishers in the top 19 including Sara Mostatabi in 11th, Marnie Hogue in 12th, Julia Rigby in 13th, Kelly Garton in 16th and Aubrey Zimmerling in 19th.  The Athenas, top ranked in the West Region, scored the lowest possible 15 points against second place Whittier, fourth in the West Region and 31st nationally and perfect scored (15-50) third place Occidental, seventh in the West Region.

The men had the top finishers among all teams from sixth on, but unfortunately in cross country only five are needed to score.  The Stags were undone by having just two finishers in the top ten.  Rafer Dannenhauer was the team's top finisher as he has been all season in sixth place.  Bryan Chow had his best race of the season in eighth place.  CMS was able to put eight runners in front of first place Occidental's fifth, but the Tigers secured the win with a one-two finish and four in the top 11.  The Stags narrowly lost to their cross campus rivals, Pomona-Pitzer, 27-28.  CMS handily beat the other five teams with a lowest possible 15 points against four of them.  The top race for the men was turned in by Russell Page. He was the team's fourth finisher in 13th place with a time of 27:38.  Last year at this race on the same course, he finished 31st in 28:40.

Both teams will race again on October 29 at the SCIAC Championships.  The race will be at Prado Regional Park in Chino.  The women will race at 8:30 with the men following at 9:15.
