West Regional Preview -- One team and six individuals will qualify out of the West Region.

The team favorites should be Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Puget Sound and Willamette. CMS is ranked first in the region. They have only lost to three Division I schools, one club team and one Canadian team this season. They won the SCIAC Championships by 23 points. They beat Willamette in their only matchup at the Willamette Invitational which was run on the regional course. Puget Sound is ranked second in the region. They won the Northwest Conference Championships over Willamette by 12 points. That meet was also on the regional course. Willamette beat Puget Sound in their only previous meeting on September 22. Puget Sound and CMS have not met this season.

The individual race begins with Dana Boyle of Puget Sound. She is undefeated this season. She ran away with the NWC title winning by 47 seconds (17:32) over the ninth place finisher at last year’s D III Championships (Lia Ossiander). Boyle qualified as an individual in 1999. Ten other runners from the region have run under 18:50 on the Willamette course this year at either the Willamette Invite or the NWC meet. Ossiander of Pacific Lutheran was the second D III finisher at both meets (18:16, 18:19) and has qualified for the nationals as an individual both the last two seasons. Whitworth’s Leslie Nelson and Jessica Austin finished 3-6 (18:22, 18:46) at the NWC meet with Willamette’s Liz Rodda and Nattalie Wright finishing 4-5 (18:25, 18:45). Rodda also ran 18:20 at the WU Invite. Willamette’s Katie Pierce ran 18:44 at their invite, but ran number eight for them at the NWC meet. CMS had their top four of Ellie Irons, Andrea Haver, Amy Foss and Angie Jacquez run 18:02, 18:28, 18:33 and 18:37 at the Willamette meet. Irons and Jacquez qualified as individuals for nationals last season. Jacquez, Foss and Irons finished 2-4-6 at the SCIAC meet with Haver running number eight for CMS. Colorado’s Emily Dickerson ran 18:42 at the Willamette Invite last season. The other runners in the hunt for individual qualifying spots who have not raced on the regional course are the SCIAC champion Laura Bishop of Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne’s Monica Martinez and Leti Arroyo who finished 3-5 at the SCIAC meet.

West Region ranking (national rank suggestion)

1 CMS (12)

2 Puget Sound (18-22)

3 Willamette (22-25)

4 Pacific Lutheran (none)

5 Whitworth (none)

Puget Sound ran their best race of the season to beat Willamette in the Northwest Conference meet. The course appeared to run slightly slower than at the Willamette Invite (<10 seconds) pretty much across the board. Willamette had their number two at NWC's run 23 seconds faster than at WU, but their number two from WU ran 50 seconds slower yesterday. CMS had their number one from their last meet run number eight, but their depth keeps them the top team in the region. The SCIAC course is not particularly fast. I estimate it to be at least 30 seconds slower than NWC. Combining the two meets and taking 30 seconds off the SCIAC times would yield the following: 1. CMS 69, 2. UPS 75, 3. Willamette 92, 4. PLU 118, 5. Whitworth 128. If everything else remained the same and the Willamette and CMS runners ran back to form, then the scores would be more like: 1. CMS 51, 2. Willamete 72, 3. UPS 75. We will find out in a couple of weeks.

SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet (Friday afternoon - 85 degrees; 89 finishers)

Complete results: http://www.physical-education.pomona.edu/results/womensxc/01duals-W.html

All SCIAC teams race at once, but score as if racing each school individually. This was a new course, but is in the same park used for all 11 years of the meet.

The fastest time recorded at this meet is 18:21 by the NCAA Division III runner-up in 1991.

1. CMS (10)

2. Willamette (18-22)

3. Puget Sound (22-25)

CMS easily won the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet. Although they did not run as well as the week before (the race was at 4:00 Friday afternoon in 85 degree weather and the team trains in the morning) their team time was 2:13.4 faster than the same meet last year. Willamette easily won the Mt. Hood Invite and again had a close-running pack of five. The rankings for 3-5 were solidified at the PLU Invite. UPS, Whitworth and PLU all have good front runners with Boyle really in a class by herself. I have created a West region page (http://cms.claremont.edu/westregion.htm) which has results and rankings from the entire season to this point.

For what it is worth, I re-did my attempt to integrate CMS and Willamette times from last week into the Augustana Pre-national race (I added 10 seconds to their times). CMS (121) would have finished between Luther/Wartburg (109) and Nebraska Wesleyan/Washington Univ (140). Willamette (215) would have finished behind St. Olaf (192), but ahead of Puget Sound (241).

Willamette Invitational (5K): 40 scoring teams, 388 finishers; 60 and overcast

complete results: http://run-down.com/bearcats/results/xc_wuinvwomens_01.php

This is a fairly fast course. By comparing the results from the pre-Nationals, Sundodger Invite and this meet it appears to be about 10 seconds faster than the Augustana course.

Off this week:

Puget Sound, Whitworth, Caltech, La Verne, Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer, Redlands, Whittier

Region rank: (suggested national rank)

1. CMS (top 10)

2. Willamette (15-18)

3. Puget Sound (22-25)

4. Pacific Lutheran (none)

5. Lewis & Clark/Whitworth (none)

The Willamette results gave a clearer picture of the West region. This course is the site of the region meet in five weeks. Four of the top five teams competed at the meet. CMS showed its front running strength, had its best team pack all season and placed second in a quality field. CMS had five of the top eight Division III finishers. They are deserving to move up in the poll. Trying the inexact science of predicting their finish in the Augustana race they would have been just behind Luther and Wartburg. Willamette was missing one runner from their Sundodger team which would have improved their score around 25 points. Puget Sound decided to rest after racing at Augustana last weekend. Pacific Lutheran moves up to four by beating Lewis & Clark runner on runner 1-5. Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran, Lewis & Clark and Whitworth will all meet next week at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational.

Western Oregon Invitational: Willamette 'B'

Trask Mountain Assault - Linfield

-------------

Off this week:

CMS, Pacific Lutheran, George Fox, Cal Lutheran, Whittier, Colorado College

Region rank: (suggested national rank)

1. CMS (12-15)

1. Willamette (12-15)

3. Puget Sound (22-25)

4. Lewis & Clark (none)

5. Whitworth (none)

I have not seen Willamette's results for the week and CMS was off. I still think they are very equal. Puget Sound performed quite well at Augustana, but I would rank them behind the other two. Boyle obviously helps their team score tremendously especially in huge meets the size of Augie's, but her finish will have less of an impact in our relatively small regional race (120 runners). The top four in the region all meet this week at the Willamette Invitational.

So much for 5K comparisons of CMS and Willamette. The course CMS ran was relatively flat and can be fast, but it was 80 degrees with lots of dust from all of the runners on the all-dirt course. The course Willamette ran is dead flat and run on quick trails. An old teammate of mine, Mike Scott (vice chair, USATF cross country council), estimated that the course is only 5-20 seconds slower than PR track times. My best guess trying to compare the two (adding 45 seconds to Willamette's times) have the teams practically even. CMS would have the top three, but Willamette has a great pack which would put all seven of their runners between CMS' three and four. Dual meet scoring would be CMS 29, WU 30. CMS and Willamette will meet for the only time until regionals in two weeks at the Willamette Invitational.

CMS finished well ahead of five ranked NAIA teams on a historically slow course over 6K. Willamette beat a D1 and D2 school with a very young squad over 4K. Next week both run at 5K which should give a little better basis for comparison.

West Region Preview

The following is a little bit about each of the top five teams at last year's West Region meet.

Willamette (1st - 71) Return four runners from last year's region team (2-3-5-6) Three of them (2-5-6) will not race for the first month due to (in order) injury, sickness and study abroad recovery. Their number three, Liz Rodda, was their top finisher at their conference meet (6th) and second for them at NCAA's (129th). They add five all-state (OR or WA) runners, two excellent track runners new to cross (5:08 1600 and 4:50/10:40 15/3) and return their number five from 1999 and number eight from last year. Some of these are returning students who have yet to compete due to injury.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2nd - 76) Return six runners from last year's region team (1-2-3-5-6-7) including NCAA individual qualifiers Ellie Irons (24th, All-American) and Angie Jacquez (53rd). Their number eight from last year, Danielle Neff, was an 800 meter All-American last spring (2:12.27) and finished 19th at the region meet in 1999. They also regain Andrea Haver who studied abroad last year. She was their number one runner in 1999, winning the SCIAC and finishing sixth at the region meet.

Whitman (3rd - 87) Lost six of their seven from the region meet (return #6)

Whitworth (4th - 100) Lost their top five, four to graduation and one to injury. Top seven returners are sophs and juniors. Their conference champ in the heptathlon is out for cross and finished second for them at their first meet. Freshmen ran fifth and eighth for them.

Pacific Lutheran (5th - 120) Return three from their region team (1-4-5) including two-time NCAA individual qualifier Lia Ossiander (9th in 2000, All-American).

The sixth thru 10th teams all return at least five of their runners from last season. The top among them is George Fox (sixth) who lost their third and fourth runners (26th & 37th), but return individual qualifier Colleen Forbes (97th at NCAA). Pomona-Pitzer (10th) returns their entire squad including Laura Bishop, the 2000 SCIAC Runner of the Year, who collapsed while running with the leaders 100 meters from the finish line at the region meet and got up to finish 28th. Other runners with national experience include Emily Dickerson (Colorado) [141st 1998] and Dana Boyle (UPS) [dnf 1999, 2nd NAIA 1998]
