LA VERNE, Calif. – The La Verne Leopards scored 12 unanswered runs to defeat the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags 12-1 to open a three-game SCIAC series on Saturday afternoon. The Stags took a 1-0 lead with a Patrick Gavin (CMC) single in the top of the second, but the Leopards responded with runs in the second, third, and fifth to take a 5-1 advantage heading into the sixth.
The Leopards then used a seven-run sixth inning to take a 12-1 lead. CMS was unable to push across the necessary runs in the top of the seventh to continue the game and the contest ended as a 12-1 victory for the Leopards after seven innings.
After the Stags were turned away in order in the first, CMS used three-straight, one-out hits to score their only run of the afternoon. CJ Novogradac (CMC) doubled to left center with one away to start the rally. A Henri Levenson (CMC) single put runners on the corners before Gavin singled the other way to plate Novogradac from third. A strike out and a fly out ended the threat, but the Stags held a 1-0 lead.
A two-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the second scored two Leopards and gave La Verne the 2-1 lead. After a quiet top of the third, the Leopards scored another run in the bottom of the stanza thanks to a two-out throwing error on the Stags.
CMS threatened in the top of the fourth, with runners on first and third and just one away. Unfortunately for the Stags, they were unable to cash in on the opportunity as a groundball double play ending the frame
La Verne scored two in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI triple and sacrifice fly plating the pair. In the sixth the Leopards extended their lead, scoring seven runs on five hits and an error.
After the Stags were unable to score in the sixth, the 12-1 La Verne lead was enough to enact the run-rule, stopping the game after seven innings.
CMS drops their first SCIAC game of the season and moves to 3-1 in conference play. The Stags are now 9-6 overall and will look to bounce back tomorrow when they host the Leopards in a doubleheader at Arce Field beginning at 11:00 a.m.
