Ella Brissett and
Muduo Zhou won an 11-9 tiebreaker to secure the doubles point, and
Alisha Chulani,
Rebecca Kong and
Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne dominated their second sets as the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 5-2 win over No. 8 Middlebury on Thursday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
Lindsay Eisenman won in both singles and doubles as well, earning a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles with
Emily Ing, and then fighting off two match points to earn the fifth point for CMS with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 1 to make the final score 5-2.
Brissett and Zhou took a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker looking to secure the doubles point after the two teams split at No. 1 and No. 2. The Panthers got back even at 5-5 and then earned a match point at 7-6, that the Athenas were able to fight off. CMS had match points at 8-7 and 9-8, and then finally were able to get the clinch with two straight points after the 9-9 changeover, with Brissett winning it on a volley at the net.
Singles were another close battle with each team winning the first set on three courts. Kong had to prevail 8-6 in a tiebreaker at No. 4 to get her first set, and Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne took the final three games for a 7-5 win at No. 6, while Chulani earned a 6-4 win at No. 3.
All three then took complete control of the second sets, with Chulani giving CMS a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3. Middlebury took decisions at No. 5 and No. 2 to tie it 2-2, but Kong was able to finish off a dominant second set with a 7-6, 6-1 win to give CMS the lead back at 3-2.
Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne then put the finishing touches on the team win with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6 to give the Athenas the fourth and deciding point. Eisenman was still early in the third set, and was able to outlast Sahana Raman in the tiebreaker, getting the final four points after being down 6-4 to take the tiebreaker 8-6 for a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 win.
CMS will be back in action next weekend for home matches against Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday, and its SCIAC opener against Caltech on Saturday.
