CMS Keeps Battling Back, Defeats Emory 4-3 at ITA Indoor Quarterfinals

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Ananya Sriniketh and Bell Zhou had dramatic three-set wins for the final two points as the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated No. 3 Emory 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Nationals at the Farm and Forge Club in Nashville.

Already trailing 1-0 after doubles, the Athenas were in a big hole early in singles, but had a collective comeback in order to take the first sets on four of six courts. Sriniketh had the biggest rally, trailing 4-0 at No. 3, but was able to win the next four games to tie it, and then prevail 7-5 to take the first set over Izzy Antanavicius.

Leah Baroudi trailed Yanire Marte 2-0 early and was still down 4-3, before taking the next three games for a 6-4 first-set win at No. 5. Rebecca Kong also fell behind 2-0 early, but rallied for a 6-4 win at No. 2, and Lindsay Eisenman took the last three games after being down 5-4 for a first-set 7-5 win at No. 1.

Kong kept the momentum going in the second set, and was able to earn the first point for CMS with a 6-4, 6-1 win to tie the score 1-1. Emory earned the lead back with a win at No. 6 from Rachel Hernandez, but Eisenman bounced back after losing momentum in the second set to dominate the third for a 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 win to tie the score 2-2.

Antanavicius fought off a match point against Sriniketh in a second-set tiebreaker to earn a split and stay alive at No. 3 for the Eagles, while Bell Zhou won a second-set tiebreaker to earn a split at No. 4 for CMS. Holyn Karp was able to outlast Baroudi in a tight three-setter (4-6, 7-5, 7-5) to put the Eagles ahead 3-2.

Sriniketh then battled back from 15-40 down on her serve at 5-5 in the third set to go ahead 6-5, and then get the last two points down 40-30 for a 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 win to level the match at 3-3. Zhou broke up 4-3 in the third after being down 40-30 to go ahead 5-3 and then served it out for the 5-4 win.

Doubles were tight on all three courts, but Emory's team of Antanavicius and Marte was able to capture the first win at No. 2 by taking the last four straight games after trailing 3-2 for a 6-3 win.

Baroudi and Rachel Garton were down 5-3 for the Athenas at No. 3, but were able to get back level at 5-5 to stay alive, and then pulled back even again down 6-5 to get it to a tiebreaker. Emory was able to do the same at No. 1, as Iris Berman and Emily Kantrovitz back from 5-3 down and 6-5 down, before prevailing in the tiebreaker to secure the doubles point for the Eagles. Rachel Hernandez and Holyn Karp then prevailed in their tiebreaker at No. 3 as well.

With the win, CMS will advance to the ITA Indoor Semifinals tomorrow, when it will take on defending national champion WashU at 3 p.m. (Pacific).
