Marsyla, Mareedu Highlight CMS Department Awards

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Individual national champions Elle Marsyla of the women's cross country and track and field teams, and Advik Mareedu of the men's tennis team earned the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athlete of the Year awards in a vote of the department's coaches and support staff.

Marsyla was the national champion in the 10000 meters for the CMS track and field team in May, recording the sixth-fastest time in NCAA Division III history. She was also the national runner-up in the 5000 meters two days later, and came in seventh in the fall for the cross country team to earn All-America honors. Her efforts helped the Athenas finish third in cross country as a team, and sixth in track and field, when she earned 18 of the 27 team points.

Mareedu repeated as the NCAA Division III men's singles champion for Stags tennis, while compiling a 43-2 record in singles and earning the ITA National Player of the Year honor. He helped CMS reach the NCAA finals for the second time in his career, as well as four trips to the semifinals in four years, while earning All-America honors in singles all four years and breaking the CMS record for singles wins in a career (144) by 16.

In addition to winning the CMS Athlete of the Year honors, both Marsyla and Mareedu were CMS representatives for the SCIAC Student-Athlete of the Year Award and were nominees for the D3 Commissioners Association (D3CA) Student-Athlete of the Year Award. Mareedu also captured the Harvey Mudd College Male Athlete of the Year Award and won the Hank Krieger Award, given to a student-athlete that exhibits athletic excellence, academic excellence and leadership.

Madeleine Kan of the women's swimming and diving team captured the Harvey Mudd College Female Athlete of the Year after winning the national championship in the 100-yard butterfly and setting CMS records in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly. Sadie Drucker of women's cross country and track and field earned the Scripps Athlete of the Year after earning All-America honors to help the Athenas finish third at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Alex Henderson of CMS baseball was the winner of the Claremont McKenna Male Athlete of the Year, while Lindsay Eisenman of women's tennis earned the CMC Female Athlete of the Year. Henderson was a first-team All-American who led the nation with 22 home runs and led the Stags to their second straight Super Regional. Eisenman was the national champion in doubles, completing the triple crown of winning a team NCAA title, a singles NCAA title and a doubles NCAA title.

In addition to her athletic awards, Eisenman also received CMC's highest honor for graduating seniors, earning the H.N. and Francis C. Berger Prize for Outstanding Seniors. Established by Fran and Nor Berger, the criteria for the Berger Prize includes academic achievement, leadership, contributions to the College and the student body, and personal integrity.

Riley Capuano of women's cross country and track and field and Jake Taylor of men's water polo  captured the Claremont McKenna Female and Male Senior Athlete of the Year honors.  Capuano was a cross country All-America winner for the third time in her career in the fall, and was the SCIAC Champion in the 1500 meters in the spring, earning second-team All-America honors. Taylor was the starting goalie on the Stags water polo team, which earned the USA Water Polo Division III national championship with a 9-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer at Axelrood Pool.

The Scripps Alumane Senior Athlete of the Year went to Caitlin Muñoz of women's water polo, after she helped the Athenas win their first SCIAC title since 2006 with a victory over Pomona-Pitzer. The Scripps Noelle and Veronique Boucquey Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award went to Ivy Doran of women's soccer, a starting center back on an Athena team that earned an NCAA bid for the second year in a row, who also graduated with over a 3.95 GPA.

The Claremont McKenna Dickinson Award, presented to the one member of the CMC student body who exhibit qualities leadership, self-discipline, determination, and conscientiousness went to Cahal Connolly of the men's basketball team, who moved into the starting lineup this year and helped the Stags to the best start in program history (16-0) and into the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.  

Thomas Walker, an All-American on the national champion men's water polo team won the Claremont McKenna William H. Alamshah Award for Student Leadership, given each year to a graduating senior honoring extraordinary leadership in student government and student self-governance.

In addition to the student-athlete awards, Charles Dean of the sports medicine staff, who also serves as the co-chair of the CMS D&I Committee, won the Claremont McKenna Staff Community Excellence Award, a special service recognition award for a faculty member, staff member, student, or group that demonstrates excellence in promoting diversity and inclusion, exceptional commitment to working against the impact and effects of racism, and expanding opportunities at the College.
