1987 Women's Soccer Takes SCIAC Title

The CMS women's soccer team was in only its third season of existence when it brought home its first SCIAC trophy in 1987. The Athenas finished with a 12-6-2 overall record and a 9-1 record in league play, with the Sixth Street battles proving to be the difference as Pomona-Pitzer came in second place. The first meeting went to overtime, with CMS prevailing 2-1, and then the rematch came in the second-to-last game of the year, when the Athenas came in at 8-0 in league play.

Unlike the first meeting, CMS dominated the Sagehens with the title on the line, and came away with a 3-0 win to secure the program's first championship. Robyn Hollingshead was named the SCIAC Player of the Year and was joined by Molly Gunn, Nicole Petrich and Andrea Sparks on the first-team All-SCIAC squad, while Chris Hall and GeAnn Kimm were on the second team.

The Athenas repeated again in 1988 with a 9-0-1 record, once again blowing second-place Pomona-Pitzer out (5-0) in a key late-season matchup to secure the title, making their two-year SCIAC record 18-1-1 (with the only defeat to Occidental in 1987 after the title was clinched). Hollingshead (SCIAC POY for the second straight year), Hall, Petrich and Diane Noonan were first-team All-SCIAC selections in 1988, while Sparks, Wendy Cole, Karen Morrill-McClure, Katie Bell, Molly Gunn and Kristin Heath were on the second team, giving the Athenas 10 honorees.
