BOSTON, Mass. -
Renee Chong had 18 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 26 seconds left, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team rallied from six points down late to earn a 71-67 win over Lebanon Valley on the first day of the Emmanuel Invitational.
With the win, CMS improves to 2-0 on the young season and advances to take on Emmanuel in the championship game tomorrow at 3 p.m. local time (12 p.m. Pacific).
Chong, who missed last season with an injury, came through with a steal with 34 seconds left and the Athenas down 67-65, and then knocked down a three-pointer after a timeout to put CMS in front 68-67. After Lebanon Valley missed two foul shots,
Grace Florendo knocked down two clutch foul shots to give CMS a 70-67 lead. Lebanon Valley missed a three-pointer to tie, and Florendo sealed the win with a free throw with one second left.
CMS trailed 67-61 with just over two minutes left, when Chong had the first of her two big steals, and
Katie Resendiz hit two foul shots to close the gap to four. After a stop, Resendiz hit a jumper in the paint off a Chong assist to make it a two-point game,
Katie Resendiz and
Syona Mandyam each had 12 points for the Athenas and Florendo added 11.
Ruva Kiara led CMS with seven rebounds, while Resendiz and
Cate Shingler eac had six.
CMS will try to improve to 3-0 tomorrow with a win over Emmanuel, which opened its season in the second semifinal game with a 66-50 win over Hunter.
