CLAREMONT, Calif. - First-year guard
Amanda Kerner exploded for 22 points, including four-three pointers to account for all 12 Athena points in the second quarter, to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team to a 50-44 win over Carleton on the second day of the David Wells Classic at Pomona-Pitzer's Voelkel Gymnasium.
CMS improves to 3-4 on the season with the win, bouncing back from a 66-63 defeat to Clark on Friday on the first day of the David Wells Classic. Carleton slips to 1-5 on the year with the loss.
The Athenas were sputtering offensively on the second leg of the back-to-back tournament, with only four points in the first quarter. The defense kept them in it, but the Athenas were still down 12-4 with 6:30 left in the half, when Kerner hit the first of her four threes.
Kerner's second three-pointer cut the deficit to 14-10 with 4:51 in the half, and she tied it at 16-16 with her fourth with 1:20 to go, before Carleton took an 18-16 lead into the break.
Carleton seized the momentum back with the first seven points of the second half, before
Syona Mandyam broke the ice with a three-pointer to get CMS back within six.
The Athenas then swung the momentum with a big effort in the final minute of the quarter, with a huge 9-0 run to turn an eight-point deficit into a one-point lead in a span of 51 seconds.
Renee Chong scored on a fast break to start it, and then Kerner hit her fifth three with 25 seconds left to close the gap to 32-29.
Kerner then scored on a fast break after
Tanya Ghai pulled in a defensive rebound in the closing seconds, and was fouled.
Katie Resendiz got an offensive rebound off the free throw and was also fouled, hitting both to give CMS a 33-32 lead going into the fourth.
Renee Chong then buried a three-pointer to start the fourth, and Kerner scored again on the fast break when
Ruva Kiara had a steal and sent her in behind the defense, to make it a 14-0 run in a span of 1:33 spanning both quarters, slipping a 32-24 deficit into a 38-32 lead.
Resendiz hit a three-pointer and a lay-up to give CMS a double-digit lead a 45-34, then answered two Carleton three-pointers with a big three with 3:23 to go to make the score 48-40 and help seal in. Ghai then had a key steal in the final minute with CMS up by six to finish off the win.
Resendiz finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds in support of Kerner's 22. Kerner came into the game with three points on the season in spot minutes, but had her breakout performance to jump start the Athenas on a day their offense was sputtering.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Whittier at 2 p.m. in its SCIAC opener.
