Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

CMS Women's Soccer Wins SCIAC Title, Earns NCAA Bid

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Emma Fogg headed in a free kick from Riley Zitar 4:59 into the second half for the game's only goal, as the third-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday in the SCIAC Tournament championship game at Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 13-3-3 overall and earns the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after beating the top two seeds on the road, including defending national champion Cal Lutheran in the semifinals. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 15-2-2, but is still likely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The game was deadlocked at 0-0 until CMS got a free kick 40 yards from goal on the right side of the field. Zitar bent a perfect cross towards the far post, and Fogg was able to get to it first and flick a header that dipped under the crossbar and inside the post for her second goal of the year.

Sadie Brown had six saves to get the shutout for the Athenas, four of which came after CMS scored to help preserve the 1-0 win. The Athenas finished with a 15-9 edge in shots, putting 10 of the shots on net, with Patricia DePalma making nine saves for the Sagehens to keep her team in it.

DePalma had six of her saves in the first 25 minutes before Pomona-Pitzer even got off a shot attempt, as CMS came out on its front foot and established itself early. The Athenas weren't able to dent the scoreboard until the second half, when Fogg was able to score the game-winner.

CMS wins its first SCIAC Tournament since 2016, when it traveled to Pomona-Pitzer for the NCAA Regionals. The Athenas did make it as an at-large team in 2019, winning a regional hosted by Cal Lutheran with a 2-1 win over Emory and a win over the Regals on penalty kicks.
