CMS Women's Basketball Coasts to 69-43 Win over Wheaton

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Katie Resendiz had 16 points, and Amanda Kerner (13) and Grace Florendo (12) each scored in double figures off the bench as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned a 69-43 win over Wheaton (Mass.) on Monday at Roberts Pavilion. 

With the win, CMS improves to 5-5 on the season, with wins in three of its last four contests, while Wheaton sees its record slip to 3-7 on the year with the loss. 

The Athenas had a big day defensively, as they forced 27 Lyons turnovers with 18 steals, led by seven from Renee Chong and four from Kylie Wang. CMS also held Wheaton to just 17-53 shooting (32.1 percent), including 3-17 from three (17.6 percent). 

CMS slowly built out a double digit lead at the half (31-20) after leading 13-7 following the opening quarter, with Florendo scoring 10 of her 12 before intermission. The Athenas then broke it open by outscoring Wheaton 24-12 in the third quarter. Resendiz had the first six CMS points of the second half on two foul shots and two lay-ups, and Kerner gave CMS a double-digit lead for good with a three-pointer to make it 42-30 with 4:36 left in the third, starting off a 13-0 run.
Resendiz followed with a jumper, Wang hit a lay-up and a foul shot and Ruva Kiara capped the 13-0 run with two free throws. Kerner then hit a fast-break three-pointer with five seconds left to give CMS a 55-32 lead going into the fourth. 

Florendo scored her 12 points in just nine minutes of work, shooting 4-5 from the floor. Kiara added seven points, Ava Grey had six, Wang had a personal-best five, and Naima Joseph contributed his first three collegiate points with a lay-up and a foul shot. 

CMS will be back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. when it takes on the University of Chicago at Roberts Pavilion.
