CLAREMONT, Calif. -
AJ Rohosy had 29 points and 18 rebounds and
Neil Owens added 24 points, including 7-13 shooting from three-pointer territory, to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team to a 93-71 win over Whittier on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
With the win, CMS moves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC before heading into a three-week break for final exams and the holidays. Whittier slips to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC with the defeat. As a team, CMS had 24 assists and only six turnovers on the day, while outrebounding Whittier 54-25.
Rohosy, who had 33 points and 18 rebounds in his SCIAC debut against La Verne last week, earning him SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, shot 12-20 from the floor and had eight of his 18 rebounds on the offensive end, while also adding four assists to his stat line.
CMS was able to get its first separation in the first half, turning a 22-22 tie into a 30-22 lead on a
Will Householter jumper with 8:02 left in the opening stanza. The Stags led by as many as 13 after an Owens three-pointer, before settling for a 48-37 lead at the break.
Whittier was able to hang around for a while in the second half, getting within five points at 61-56, but Rohosy and Householter had three points apiece in a 6-0 run to get the lead up to double digits. Whittier got it to within 70-62, but a 9-0 run, started by a
Robert Power three-pointer and ending with one from Owens, effectively put the game away.
Reid Jones had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Stags, while Householter finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Matt Meredith also added nine rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench to help the Stags to their lopsided rebounding margin.
CMS will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 30, when it takes on St. Mary's (Minn.) for a 5 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
