CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Cate Lewison scored 4:03 into the second half as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team was able to overcome a halftime deficit and come away with a 1-1 tie with UC Santa Cruz on Saturday morning at Pritzlaff Field.
With the draw, CMS moves to 2-0-3 on the year, remaining undefeated after playing on back-to-back days, earning a 5-0 win over St. Catherine's on Friday morning before turning around 24 hours later to face UC Santa Cruz. The Banana Slugs move to 2-2-3 on the year with the tie.
Lewison scored her goal after
Flora Glantz broke into the right side of the penalty area. Glantz was met by a Banana Slug defender and laid the ball off to Lewison, who took a dribble to her right. She then came back to her left foot and bent a shot that tucked inside the far post to knot the score up at a goal apiece.
Sadie Brown then preserved the tie when she made a diving save at full extension with just over four minutes to play, keeping the ball out of the upper-right corner.
CMS finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots, and had a 7-0 edge in corner kicks over the Banana Slugs. Brown finished with five saves for the Athenas on the day.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it opens SCIAC play with a home game against defending national champion Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. The Athenas ended their home schedule with a 2-2 tie against Cal Lutheran last year, behind goals from
Annie McKinley and
Echo Malinowski-Cunningham.
