Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Athenas Water Polo Splits on Opening Day

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Valerie Wraith scored four goals and Jordan LaCour and Grace Clark each added three, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team went 1-1 on opening day with a 15-10 win over CSU Monterey Bay on Saturday at Long Beach State.

The Athenas also met Division I Loyola Marymount in its first game of the day and fell 16-5, with Isabel Del Villar leading the way with two goals.

CMS led 8-6 at the half against Monterey Bay, and then outscored the Sea Otters 5-0 in the third quarter to take control. LaCour ended the first half with a goal with one second left to give CMS the momentum going into intermission, and Wraith scored on the first possession of the second half to turn what had been a tight 7-6 lead into a 9-6 advantage.

CMS kept the momentum going, as LaCour finished off her hat trick with 6:49 left in the third, and Clark adding her second less than one minute later to make the score 11-6. Wraith then scored again, and Elise Power capped off the 5-0 third quarter (and the 6-0 run spanning both halves) to put CMS ahead 13-6 going into the fourth.

Christina Marlow and Del Villar added fourth quarter goals to prevent the Sea Otters from making a comeback, and the Athenas were able to coast in for the 15-10 victory. Mason Spencer had seven saves in the second half in relief of Natalie Stearns, who got the win. Caitlin Muñoz, Marlow and Ka'imi Duncklee each had two assists, and Del Villar had four steals to lead the defense.

In the first game of the day, Loyola Marymount got out to an 8-0 lead at the half, before the Athenas, who just reported for preseason practice on Monday, were able to get their offense clicking in the second half. Clark broke the ice on a 6-on-5 on the first second half possession for CMS, before Del Villar scored the next two, and Fiona Murphy and Muñoz added goals.

CMS will next be in action in two weeks when it competes at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego from Jan. 31-Feb. 2.
