Stags Basketball Suffers First SCIAC Loss in Closing Seconds to Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, Calif. - AJ Rohosy had 27 points on 11-12 shooting to go with seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and four blocks, but Devon Lewis hit a step-back jumper for Cal Lutheran with 10 seconds left to break a 76-76 tie and give the Kingsmen a 78-76 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

The loss was the first of the season in conference play for the Stags, who fall to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran moves a half-game into first place with the win, upping its record to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in SCIAC play.

Cal Lutheran led by nine with 6:51 to go, but CMS was able to come all the way back to tie it on a three-pointer from Neil Owens with 38 seconds left after a kick-out pass from Joey Kennedy, who had 15 points in only his third collegiate game after missing the first season and a half with an injury.

Cal Lutheran called a timeout and ran the shot clock all the way to the end, when Lewis drove and stepped back to the three-point line on the left wing for the go-ahead jumper. It was ruled a three-pointer on the floor, but a video review changed it to a two-pointer, giving the Stags a chance to go for the tie with a two-pointer or the win with a three-pointer.

Owens, who had the game-winner against Chapman on Saturday with four seconds left on a 15-foot baseline fadeaway, momentarily looked like he was going to pull up for a go-ahead three. He then faked and drove the lane, but lost his balance in the paint and had to throw the ball up towards the rim as he fell to the ground while there was still time for a putback. Several players converged on the rebound, but nobody could control it, and the ball ended up falling to the ground as the horn expired, giving the Kingsmen the win.

After Cal Lutheran took a nine-point lead at 65-56 with 6:51 to go, Rohosy came up big down the stretch to nearly lead the Stags to a comeback, scoring 12 points on 5-5 shooting and adding two free throws to get CMS within 74-73 with 1:25 left. Tommy Griffitts then scored for the Kingsmen, before Owens was able to tie it temporarily with a three-pointer.

Owens finished with 15 points for the Stags, knocking down five three-pointers. Griffitts had 23 points for Cal Lutheran, while Lewis and Matthew Verkamp each had 20.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Pomona-Pitzer for a 7 p.m. contest.
