Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jones Has 13 Steals, Kennedy Has Double-Double as Stags Pull Away from Puget Sound

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Reid Jones had 18 points and 13 steals, and Joey Kennedy added a career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team pulled away from Puget Sound for an 86-64 win on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the David Wells Classic at Pomona-Pitzer's Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, CMS remains undefeated at 7-0 on the year, while Puget Sound slips to 4-3 with the loss.

Jones had his third double-double with points and steals already this season, after tallying 26 points and 10 steals against George Fox and 13 points and 10 steals against UC Santa Cruz. The 13 steals is only four shy of the NCAA Division III single-game record of 17, which was set by Matt Newton of Principia against Harris-Stowe on Jan. 4, 1994.

Jones had nine of his steals in the second half, as CMS extended its 37-33 halftime lead out to a 22-point final margin. Kennedy, meanwhile, eclipsed his previous career high in scoring of 15 points, which he had accomplished three times, including twice this season against George Fox and Willamette.

The Loggers scored the first basket of the second half to pull within two points, before Kennedy scored on a lay-up, and Jones had a steal and fast break lay-up. After Zane Miller hit a three-pointer for Puget Sound, Kennedy scored again in the paint and then made two foul shots.

Puget Sound pulled within 45-40, but the Stags scored the next seven points, with Luke Jacobson converting two lay-ups around a three-point play from Kennedy. After a Puget Sound foul shots, CMS went on another 8-0 run on two Samuel Gibbs three-pointers around a Jones fastbreak jumper, to go ahead 60-41.

James Frye had 15 points for the Stags off the bench, and Will Householter added 11. The Stags forced 29 turnovers on the day behind Jones' 13 steals, with Kennedy also adding three.

Jones now has 45 steals in seven games this season, an average of 6.4 per contest. The NCAA Division III record of 6.3 is held by Moses Jean-Pierre of Plymouth State, set in 1994. There has only been one player since 2000 who has averaged over five per game (Calvin Cheek of New England College with 5.1 in 2018). Last year's leader was Vincent Rodriguez of Greenville with 3.9 per game.

CMS will be back in action when it opens SCIAC play on Wednesday night at home against La Verne.
