FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Junior guard
Reid Jones had a career-high 28 points, and senior forward
Cahal Connolly added a career-high 18 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team opened the season with a dominant 95-61 road win at Pacific on Friday evening.
Samuel Gibbs added 11 points off the bench in his CMS debut, while
Brady Karich had five assists in his first collegiate start.
Connolly opened the game with the first six points, and then answered a Pacific basket with a dunk to make it 8-2. The Boxers got back within 11-10, but
Will Householter hit two foul shots, Connolly added two more, and Jones hit a jumper to get the lead to 17-10.
Gibbs had an old-fashioned three-point play, and Jones knocked down a three-pointer to give CMS its first double-digit lead at 23-13. Jones then had a three-point play and
Joey Kennedy followed with a layup to make it 30-15.
James Frye hit two straight jumpers to get the lead up to 45-24. In the final minute of the half, Jones had two straight baskets, and Karich had a three-point play off a steal with one second left to make it a 55-29 CMS advantage at halftime.
CMS used an 8-0 run early in the second half to go ahead 72-40 with 11:27 to go and effectively put the game away.
Nathan Noronha added seven second-half points, and
Luke Jacobson went 3-3 from the floor for six points.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it competes its two-game road swing at George Fox.
