Tanya Ghai had a season-high 16 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team secured a 67-58 victory over Occidental College on Wednesday at Rush Gymnasium in Los Angeles, CA.
With the win, CMS stays alive in the SCIAC playoff chase, improving to 8-13 overall and 4-8 in SCIAC. The Tigers slip to 12-11 overall and 7-7 in the league.
Katie Resendiz was also a key player, contributing 17 points and leading the team with five steals and seven rebounds.
Renee Chong scored eight points and provided four assists, while also securing five rebounds.
Ruva Kiara matched Chong's eight points and grabbed six total rebounds.
The first quarter saw a back-and-forth contest with both teams tied at 11 points by the end of the quarter. Chong opened the scoring with a layup at 8:38, while
Katie Resendiz contributed with a layup and a free throw, giving the Athenas an early lead. Kiara also played a crucial role, scoring two layups, including one at 2:00 to even the score.
CMS then outscored the Tigers 28-17 in the second quarter, marked by a significant contribution from Resendiz, who added six points with three consecutive layups. Ghai also played a crucial role, scoring 10 points, including two three-pointers. The team maintained control with strong defensive efforts, as
Kayla Ishibashi recorded a steal and
Katie Resendiz added a block and a defensive rebound to keep the momentum in favor of the Athenas.
In the third quarter, CMS extended their lead with a strong performance, scoring 15 points compared to Occidental's 13. Chong contributed significantly, opening the quarter with a layup at 10:00, and later assisting
Katie Resendiz for a layup at 3:15.
Grace Florendo hit a crucial 3-pointer at 6:50, while Ghai closed the quarter with a jumper in the paint, bringing the score to 54-41 in favor of CMS.
In the fourth quarter,
Amanda Kerner contributed significantly by scoring five points, including a successful 3-pointer at 7:30. Resendiz sealed the game by hitting two crucial free throws in the final seconds, leading to a 67-58 victory for CMS.
The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday when they host Pomona-Pitzer for a 2 p.m. contest, which will also be Senior Day.
