WHITTIER, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team jumped out to big leads early in both games as it swept a doubleheader from Occidental, winning the opening game 6-2 and then taking the nightcap 15-5.
With the win, CMS improves to 4-2 overall on the season and starts out SCIAC play at 3-0, after also taking the series opener at Occidental yesterday 14-3.
Dillon Martin was 7-for-8 in the doubleheader, including 5-for-5 with three RBI in the nightcap, after going 2-for-3 in the opener.
Nate Seluga added four RBI in the second game, while
Andrew Mazzone was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.
In the opener, the Stags took an early lead with a six-run first.
Carter Bennett began the scoring by reaching base on a walk, advancing on a wild pitch, and eventually scoring on a double by Martin.
Blaise Heher and
Bryce Didrickson contributed with an RBI each, while Seluga delivered a two-RBI double, and
Slader Spoor capped the inning with an RBI single, bringing the score to 6-0.
The Tigers scored a run in the third and a run in the fifth, but over the final innings, the Stags pitchers held Occidental to just two runs over nine innings.
Parker McGraw pitched four innings without allowing an earned run, striking out two batters.
Hamilton Finefrock threw three innings, giving up two hits and striking out four, to get the win.
In the nightcap, CMS again started strong in the first inning with
Andrew Mazzone reaching base on a single and advancing to third on a subsequent wild pitch. Martin singled to move Mazzone to third, and
Alex Henderson's sacrifice fly to center field brought Mazzone home, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Mazzone hit a home run, driving in Bennett, who had walked. The two-run blast was followed by a double from Martin and a two-RBI double from
Keegan Cabrera, pushing the score to 6-1. In the fifth inning, Cabrera doubled and scored on an error, followed by Seluga and
Max Pemberton reaching base and scoring on a triple by Martin, which increased the lead to 11-2.
In the sixth inning, the home team capitalized again with a two-RBI double from Seluga and a sacrifice fly by Pemberton adding three more runs, while Bennett's double capped off the inning, making the score 14-5.
Matt Bergan pitched 3 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out four batters, while
Hudson Hilen threw the fourth to get the win.
Aaron Herst pitched the final inning without allowing a run
CMS will be back in action when it takes on Chapman in a three-game series next weekend, beginning with a single game at Azusa Pacific on Friday at 5 p.m.
