THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team fired on all cylinders as it captured a 14-6 win over Toronto and a 27-10 win over UC Merced on Saturday at the Tina Finali Tournament hosted by Cal Lutheran.
Grace Clark had a hat trick in the first contest against Toronto, and then had four goals and three assists against UC Merced.
Christina Marlow and
Isabel Del Villar also had four goals in the nightcap, while
Athena Mor,
Tatum Dwyer and
Valerie Wraith each had three.
Clark had three early goals against UC Merced to help put CMS ahead 5-1, and the Athenas then broke it open with a 9-0 run overlapping both halves that turned a 9-4 advantage into a commanding 18-4 lead. Del Villar, Elisa Power, Clark and Wraith closed out the half with goals to make it 13-4 at intermission, and Wraith,
Jordan LaCour, Caitlin Muño, Mor and Power started the second half with goals.
Mason Spencer had five steals and two saves in the first half to get the win in goal, while Clark and Mor each had three steals.
CMS jumped out to a 4-0 lead in its first game against Toronto and was never threatened, as LaCour, Del Villar, Clark and Power scored in the first 3:27 to give the Athenas control. LaCour scored again to make it 7-1 early in the second, and Dwyer,
Fiona Murphy, Marlow, Power and Mor scored in the second half to help CMS keep its commanding lead.
Del Villar led the defense with four steals, while Stearns had six saves.
CMS will be back in action when it co-hosts the Claremont Convergence this Friday and Saturday at Axelrood Pool.
