Athenas Basketball Prevails Late for 64-60 Win over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Renee Chong had 14 points, including a big three-pointer with 1:56 to go and two foul shots with 11 seconds left, to give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team a 64-60 win over Redlands on Wednesday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

With the win, the Athenas improve to 7-12 overall and 3-7 in the SCIAC, while Redlands slips to 10-10 overall and 5-6 in the conference with the loss.

Chong opened the second half with a three-pointer to put CMS ahead 31-30, and the Athenas almost led the rest of the way. The Bulldogs did briefly take the lead at 56-55 with 4:40 to go on an AJ Wick lay-up to cap a 6-0 run, but two foul shots from Katie Resendiz put the Athenas back in front 57-56 with 3:49 to go.

The score held for the next two minutes, until Resendiz kicked a pass out to Chong for a deep three-pointer late in the shot clock with 1:56 to go to put the Athenas up by four. Wick answered with a lay-up 16 seconds later, and the Athenas were able to kill 1:20 of game clock thanks to three offensive rebounds, two from Resendiz, before Redlands finally got the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead with just over 20 seconds left.

Carly Hicks attempted a go-ahead three-pointer in transition for the Bulldogs, but missed, and Amanda Kerner grabbed the key defensive rebound with 13 seconds left. After a timeout, Chong was fouled and hit both three throws to make it a two-possession game at 62-58. Resendiz added two more foul shots, and Redlands capped off the scoring with a harmless lay-up at the buzzer.

Redlands jumped out to a 14-3 lead early and held a 17-7 advantage after the first quarter, but CMS started to clock offensively in the second quarter with 21 points, as Grace Florendo gave CMS its first lead at 24-23 with a free-throw line jumper, before the Bulldogs took a 30-28 lead into the break.

CMS held a 48-38 rebounding edge, with Ruva Kiara tallying 10 off the bench in 21 minutes to lead the way, and Chong and Resendiz each adding seven. The Athenas shot 9-15 from three-point territory as a team, with Kerner and Chong each knocking down three, and Ava Grey adding two.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to face Whittier, which is undefeated in SCIAC play this season, at 2 p.m. The Athenas had the Poets beat at home back in December, up by four in the final 10 seconds, but the Poets hit a three, had a steal, and won it by one on a fast break lay-up with 0.3 seconds left.
