MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team bounced back after losing the doubles point in a tiebreaker, to take five of six singles lines and earn a 5-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals of the Division III ITA Indoor Championships on Saturday.
With the win, the Athenas improve to 6-0 on the season and advance to face No. 1 and defending national champion University of Chicago at 10:30 local time (8:30 a.m. Pacific).
Alisha Chulani and
Rebecca Kong took a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Sagehens were able to win 6-3 at No. 2 and prevailed 7-5 in a tiebreaker at No. 3 for the swing point.
However, the Athenas were able to take control in singles, winning straight-set decisions at No. 3-6 to rally back for the win. Chulani and Kong completed their singles-doubles sweeps, with Chulani winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Kong earning a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Muduo Zhou was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 5, and Celistina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne captured a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Lindsay Eisenman dug down after a tough start and was able to earn a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles for the final point of the match.
CMS and Chicago will meet tomorrow for the ITA Indoor title after facing each other last year at the same event, which the Athenas won. CMS also won the NCAA Division III title over the Maroons in 2022 and 2023, before the Maroons earned their first title last spring, defeating Wesleyan in the finals.
