Rebecca Kong took a straight set win at No. 4 singles, but the top-ranked Chicago women's tennis team was able to capture a 4-1 win over No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the finals of the ITA Division III Indoor Championships on Sunday.
CMS slips to 6-1 on the season after suffering its first defeat of the year to the defending champion and No. 1 ranked Maroons, following wins over WashU and No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer to start the ITA Indoor Championships.
Chicago earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, and then were able to get three singles win to get the clinch. Kong earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 to give CMS a glimmer of hope, but Sylwia Mikos, the nation's No. 1 ranked singles player, was able to hold off
Lindsay Eisenman in the second set 7-5 to put the Maroons up 3-1, and Clara Zou finished off the clinch at No. 6.
Alisha Chulani and
Muduo Zhou both had their matches unfinished at 5-4 in the second set, as they were looking to battle back to force a split. Chulani was down 6-4, 5-4 to Erica Ekstrand in a tight battle at No. 3.
CMS will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Sewanee back at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
