CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team battled a pair of Division I teams on the second day of the Claremont Convergence on Saturday, earning an 11-6 win over Santa Clara and a narrow 14-11 defeat to CSU Northridge at Axelrood Pool.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opened the match with a strong offensive performance, scoring four consecutive goals in the first period.
Grace Clark initiated the scoring at 6:16, assisted by
Caitlin Muñoz, which followed by a Muñoz goal at 4:53.
Valerie Wraith and
Elise Power added to the lead, ending the first frame 4-0.
The Broncos managed to find the net at 7:08 in the second period with a goal from Libby Slater, but CMS responded with two more goals, including another from Clark at 2:00. The third period saw a scoring surge from CMS, with Wraith and Clark each contributing to extend the lead, as the period ended 10-3. Santa Clara closed with three straight goals to make the final 11-6.
Clark led the team with four goals and two assists, while Power contributed with three goals on all three shot attempts. Goalie
Natalie Stearns recorded five saves to get the win.
In the nightcap, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and CSU Northridge had a competitive match, with CMS getting goals from
Valerie Wraith and
Tatum Dwyer to take a 2-1 lead.
Isabel Del Villar closed out the half with a goal to keep the Athenas within 6-5, but CSUN scored the first two goals of the second half, and answered every CMS goal the rest of the way to hold on for the 14-11. win.
Wraith led CMS with three goals from six shots and contributed an assist. Clark, Del Villar and Muñoz scored two goals, and
Mason Spencer made eight saves and contributed an assist.
CMS will be back in action when it opens SCIAC play at Chapman on Wednesday.
