Tenth-Ranked Stags Baseball Pushes Win Streak to 11 With 8-3 Win over Tufts

AZUSA, Calif. - Dillon Martin and Alex Henderson hit back-to-back home runs, and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pitching depth continued to shut down its opponents, as the No. 10-ranked Stags defeated Tufts 8-3 at Cougar Stadium on Tuesday for their 11th win in a row.

CMS, which was ranked No. 10 in the ABCA Coaches Poll released earlier on Tuesday, now stands at 15-3 on the season, and hasn't lost a game since a 4-1 defeat to Chapman in February. The Stags bounced back to defeat the Panthers twice the next day to win the series, and haven't lost since, while not allowing more than five runs in any of those wins. Tufts slips to 3-7 on the year with the loss.

Martin finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Henderson was 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Andrew Mazzone was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Parker McGraw started and threw three shutout innings, while Colin McNiven closed with two shutout innings for the Stags.

CMS jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, as Alex Henderson had an RBI single, and Nate Seluga and Slader Spoor each drew bases-loaded walks. A Mazzone single in the second stretched it to 4-0, and after Tufts pulled to within 4-1 in the top of the fourth, Martin hit a two-run blast in the bottom half to stretch the lead to 6-1, and Henderson followed with a solo shot to make it 7-1.

Tufts had a two-run home in the sixth to get to within 7-3, but Blaise Heher scored Martin with an RBI single in the bottom half to make it 8-3. Henry Connell followed with a scoreless seventh, and McNiven closed with two innings of one-hit relief.

CMS will be back in action this weekend for a three-game series with Redlands, beginning with a road game on Friday.
