CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Madison Gonzalez had a pair of doubles for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball, including a tying RBI double in the first, but La Verne pushed across an unearned run in the seventh to take a 2-1 win over the Athenas in the first of a three-game series on Friday at Athena Field.
The loss was the first that CMS has suffered in SCIAC play this season and drops the Athenas to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC, while La Verne improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win.
La Verne struck for a run in the top of the first as Ashley Rodriguez hit a ground ball to first that Gonzalez was able to pull in with a diving snag, but Rodriguez was able to beat the throw to
Emma Suh covering first to plate the run.
CMS got it right back in the bottom half as
Giselle Lai roped a single up the middle, and Gonzalez followed with a double into the right-center field gap to tie the score at 1-1.
The score remained frozen there until the top of the seventh, when Angelina Aldrete was able to punch a single through the 5-6 hole to plate an unearned run.
Alex Wedemeyer drew a one-out walk in the bottom half to put the tying run aboard, but Aldrete made the final two outs in left field.
The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at La Verne, starting at 12 p.m.
