MAHWAH, N.J. -
AJ Rohosy had 24 points and 20 rebounds, and
Will Householter added 22, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team came up just short as it fell to Ramapo 89-84 in double overtime in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The loss ends the Stags' season at 20-8, while Ramapo improves to 21-7 and advances to face Mary Washington, thanks to shooting 18-18 from the foul line in the two overtime sessions.
CMS survived two more potential game-winning shots at the buzzer of regulation, after both Redlands and Cal Lutheran missed two game-winners in the closing seconds in the SCIAC Tournament to enable the Stags to earn the SCIAC's automatic bid.
Matt Meredith was able to tie the game with nine seconds left in regulation for the Stags, and Rohosy (three-point play) and Householter (running jumper) knotted the score in the final minute of the first overtime to bring it to a second extra session.
Householter had a tying jumper in the second overtime, and Rohosy had a steal and breakaway dunk with 1:39 left to tie it 77-77, but Ramapo took the lead on a pair of foul shots and then was 8-8 in the final minute from the line to keep CMS from getting possession with a chance to tie.
The Stags led by eight points early at 17-9 after a Householter jumper and a three-pointer, and
Reid Jones three-point play, but Ramapo used a 10-0 run later in the half to go ahead 30-27.
Neil Owens tied it with a three-pointer with five seconds left, before the Roadrunners took a two-point lead into the break.
A Householter three-pointer gave CMS its first lead of the second half at 44-43, and
Caelan Jones had a three-pointer to put the Stags up 47-44, but after the Roadrunners went back ahead 49-48 with 10:25 to go, neither team had more than a two-point lead the rest of regulation, and neither team ever had a two-possession lead until the final minute of the second overtime.
Rohosy had 14 of his 20 rebounds on the offensive end to match his career high set against Redlands earlier this season.
Neil Owens finished with 13 points for CMS, and
Caelan Jones had 12.
