WHITTIER, Calif. -
Hannah Adams threw a complete game for her eighth win of the season, and
Imani Ferris was 2-for-2 to lead a 10-hit attack, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team opened up its weekend series with Whittier with a 5-2 road win on Friday.
With the win, CMS moves to 16-10 overall on the year and improves to 7-6 in SCIAC play, while Whittier falls to 15-17 overall.
Adams worked out of a bases loaded, nobody-out jam in the first to keep the game scoreless, after giving up two of her three hits on the day (the second on a bunt).
Danica Stirling and Ferris had singles in the second and came around to score on an error to put the Athenas up 2-0.
Ferris drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to push the lead to 3-0, scoring
Rachel Sapirstein, who had a one-out single and moved up on singles from
Mrdah Murali and Stirling.
Whittier got a run back on an error in the fourth, but the Athenas put it away with two runs in the sixth. Ferris led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt single from
Delanie Stevens, and scored on an RBI single from
Sophia Nguyen. Stevens then came home on an error to account for the final Athenas run.
The Poets managed a run with two outs in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but Adams was able to close the door with a flyout to get the win and improve to 8-4. Stirling and Nguyen each finished 2-for-3 for the Athenas.
The two teams will complete the three game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at CMS, starting at 12 noon.
