Athenas Water Polo Advances to SCIAC Finals with 20-6 Win over Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Isabel Del Villar had five goals, and Grace Clark and Valerie Wraith added four, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team took a 20-6 win over Chapman in the SCIAC Semifinals on Thursday evening at Axelrood Pool.

With the win, CMS improves to 19-9 on the year, advances to the SCIAC Finals to meet Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, and secures a bid in the USA Water Polo Division III Championships, which will be held next Saturday-Sunday at Augustana College.

Del Villar, Clark and Wraith were each first-team All-SCIAC selections and combined for 13 goals, while second-team All-SCIAC selection Caitlin Muñoz added three more.

CMS was deadlocked 3-3 with Chapman when goalie Mason Spencer beat the first quarter buzzer with her second goal of the season, starting a 6-0 run. Del Villar opened the second quarter with a goal, and Wraith and Clark alternated two goals apiece to stretch the lead to 9-3, before the Panthers scored the final goal of the half to make it 9-4 at the break.

Del Villar scored three times in a 5-0 run to start the second half, with Wraith and Fiona Murphy scoring in between. Muñoz then rattled off her three goals to help put away the win.

CMS had a strong day defensively with 16 steals as a team, with Spencer and Del Villar leading with three apiece. Spencer had five saves in the first half and Natalie Stearns added eight in the second half.

CMS and Pomona-Pitzer met once this season, when the Sagehens pulled out a tight 7-5 win over the Athenas at Axelrood Pool. They could meet twice more, including Saturday in the SCIAC Championship, and then potentially again next Sunday for the USA Water Polo Division III Championship, after both earned bids on Thursday.
