PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team honored its eight seniors, and came away with a split of a doubleheader with Caltech, as
Matthew Bergan threw a shutout in an 11-0 win in the nightcap to help the Stags win the series.
With the split, CMS moves to 28-9 overall and 14-7 in league play, after Caltech came back from a 6-1 deficit to win the opener 8-6. Bergan was joined in the Senior Day ceremonies by
Henry Connell,
Hamilton Finefrock,
Andrew Mazzone,
Jack Potter,
Derek Seneker,
Lucas Welch, and
PJ Wendler, who comprise the winningest class in CMS baseball history.
Bergan allowed just two hits and struck out seven for the complete-game victory in the nightcap, which was shortened to seven innings when
Dillon Martin hit a two-run homer to enforce the run rule. Martin was 4-for-5 in the nightcap with three RBI, while
Nate Seluga was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, as the Stags pounded out 17 hits on the day.
Alex Henderson,
Blaise Heher and
Bryce Didrickson each had two-hit games as well.
In the opener, CMS led 6-1 in the second after an RBI double from
Andrew Mazzone, but were unable to score the rest of the way. Mazzone and
Carter Bennett each had two out singles in the ninth to bring the winning run to the plate, but Joseph Pieper was able to get a groundout to finish off a four-inning save.
CMS will be back in action when it closes out the regular season with a three-game series with Cal Lutheran next weekend, beginning with a single game at Redlands on Friday at 3 p.m.
