CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Perri Derian threw a complete-game four-hitter to take the opener as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took the opening game of a doubleheader with Pomona-Pitzer 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Pomona-Pitzer bounced back to take the nightcap 9-1, but CMS took the series after also winning the opening game on Friday, and now stands level with the Sagehens at 10-8 in SCIAC, along with Cal Lutheran but with the tiebreaker in hand, as the three teams are fighting for the final two playoff spots.
CMS gave Derian all the offense she would need with three runs in the first inning.
Giselle Lai drove home the first one with an RBI single, and
Rachel Sapirstein followed with a two-run single.
Pomona-Pitzer got one back in the sixth, but
Madison Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to restore the three-run lead, scoring
Kaili Aqui.
CMS will conclude the regular season next weekend with a three-game series with Chapman, including a home doubleheader on Saturday which will serve as the program's Senior Day.
