THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -
Emma Suh hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team a 2-1 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader, completing a sweep after going 4-for-4 in the opener to help the Athenas win 2-0.
With the wins, CMS moves to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran slips to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
With one out in the seventh,
Danica Stirling singled up the middle and was removed for pinch-runner
Sophia Nguyen. One out later,
Kaili Aqui reached to put runners on first and second, and Suh went the other way with a single down the line to score Nguyen from second.
Maya Weigel-Murphy then came on in relief of
Ella Yerkes to get the final out, securing the save with a big strikeout to end the game. Yerkes allowed just one hit in three innings of work to get the win, while Stirling (2-for-3) and Suh (2-for-4) each had multi-hit games for CMS.
In the opening game,
Madison Gonzalez had both RBI in a 2-0 win, picking up an RBI single in the third and an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh. Suh and
Giselle Lai each singled in front of Gonzalez in the third to set the table.
In the seventh, Aqui, Suh and Lai all had singles and Gonzalez RBI groundout was able to plate Aqui with an insurance run.
Weigel-Murphy started and went five innings to get the win, allowing two hits, while Yerkes closed with two innings of no-hit relief to get the save. Suh was 4-for-4 and Lai went 2-for-3 for the Athenas.
CMS will be back in action next weekend with a key series with nationally ranked Redlands, beginning with a single game at home on Friday at 3 p.m.
