Athenas Water Polo Picks up 10-6 Road Win over Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.  - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team defeated California Lutheran University 10-6 in a SCIAC conference matchup on Saturday at Samuelson Aquatics Center.

With the win, CMS improves to 15-9 overall on the season, while improving its SCIAC record to 8-1.

The Regals opened the scoring with a goal by Chloe Gardhouse at 7:01 in the first period, but CMS quickly responded with a goal from Caitlin Muñoz at 6:38.

After the teams were deadlocked 3-3 after the first, the Athenas then dominated the second period, scoring four unanswered goals, bringing the score to 7-3 by halftime, as Isabel Del Villar capped off the 4-0 quarter with a goal with 16 seconds left.

Cal Lutheran closed to within 8-5 after three, but in the final period, Grace Clark scored a penalty shot at 6:56, and Jasmine Tang added another goal, sealing the win for the Athenas. 

Muñoz led CMS with four goals, while also contributing one assist and drawing two exclusions. Clark scored two goals, while tallying one assist, and winning two sprints. Elise Power added to the team's efforts with one goal, one assist, and drawing five exclusions, while Tatum Dwyer excelled defensively with three steals and contributed one goal in the match.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night, when it hosts Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
