AMHERST, Mass. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team opened up its NCAA Tournament play in dominant fashion, taking a 4-0 win over Colby-Sawyer in the second round on Saturday morning at Amherst College.
With the win, CMS improves to 17-3 on the year and will move on to the third round (regional finals) tomorrow against the winner between Amherst and Vassar at 7 a.m. (Pacific time).
The Athenas took the doubles point by dropping only two games on three courts.
Alisha Chulani and
Rebecca Kong earned a 6-0 win at No. 1, which was followed minutes later by a 6-1 win from
Emily Ing and
Lindsay Eisenman at No. 2.
Bell Zhou and
Ella Brissett led 4-1 at No. 3 when their match was halted.
Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne needed 31 minutes to take a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to put CMS ahead 2-0. Eisenman earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 and Chulani picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 within moments of each other to finish off the match with a 4-0 shutout.
When the match was halted, Brissett was closing in on a win at No. 2 singles, where she led 6-1, 5-0, while Kong was up 6-1, 5-1 at No. 4 and Zhou lef 6-0, 4-1 at No. 5.
If CMS wins tomorrow, it will advance to nationals for the 13th straight season since 2011 (skipping two for the pandemic). Nationals will be held from May 20-27 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont.
