REDLANDS, Calif. - The fourth-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team was one inning away from the SCIAC title, but second-seeded Chapman was able to rally for a 3-2 win to force a second game, and then took the nightcap 4-0, as the Athenas ended their SCIAC postseason run as runners-up on Sunday.
CMS falls to 22-16 with the two losses, while Chapman improves to 31-9 and earns the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Athenas won their first two games in the SCIAC Tournament, rallying from down 6-2 against top-seeded Redlands with a five-run seventh inning, and then using another five-run inning on Saturday to defeat Chapman 7-0. The Panthers came back through the loser's bracket with a win over Redlands, and needed to defeat CMS twice on Sunday in the double-elimination tournament, while CMS needed to win only once.
In the first game,
Brooke Goodman gave CMS an early 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run double in the second, which nearly held up as the championship-winning hit.
Rachel Sapirstein doubled with one out, and
Giselle Lai was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, before Goodman doubled to straightaway center field.
Charisma Ortel had a two-out RBI single in the fourth to close the gap to 2-1, and the Athenas nearly broke it open in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs.
Danica Stirling's deep drive to center field, though, was pulled in by Miranda Murphy on the run. Murphy then had a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give the Panthers their first lead.
Delanie Stevens beat out a single with one out in the seventh to put the tying run on base, but Ashley Hester was able to get the final two outs for the complete game win.
In the second game, Rose Malen, the SCIAC Pitcher of the Year, threw a complete-game three-hit shutout to improve to 15-4 on the season and enable the Panthers to earn the league title.
Aqui had two of the singles, leading off the game with a bunt single and adding another one in the third, while
Rachel Sapirstein added the other single to right-center in the second. Malen pitched to the minimum 12 batters over the final four innings to close it out.
Defensively, Aqui also made another over-the-shoulder catch for the final out of the sixth inning, reminiscent of her over-the-shoulder catch for the last out of the 7-6 win over Redlands with the bases loaded on Friday to save the win.
