Bell Zhou had straight-set wins in singles, but Johns Hopkins was able to win the fourth and decisive point behind Kamila Wong 7-6, 7-6 performance at No. 6 singles to earn a hard-fought 4-3 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the loss, CMS falls to 18-4 on the season, while Johns Hopkins improves to 15-6 and moves on to face WashU in the NCAA Semifinals tomorrow, after the Bears upset No. 1 Chicago 4-3.
The Bule Jays took the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1, with Eisenman and
Emily Ing in position to close out a win at No. 2, where they led 5-3. Eisenman and Kong won by identical 6-0, 6-2 scores to give the Athenas some momentum in the singles portion, and Zhou followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win to give CMS a 3-1 lead.
Johns Hopkins got a point back at No. 3 with a 7-6, 6-1 win, and then took the momentum back, with Sahana Sanjeev taking a three-set win at No. 2. Wong won the first set tiebreaker 7-1, and then faced a set point in the tiebreaker down 6-5, but she was able to get back level, and then win the next two points to secure the win.
Eisenman will continue on the NCAA singles competition, while Chulani and Kong will compete in the doubles competition, which gets underway on Saturday.
