CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team honored its five seniors before a doubleheader with Chapman, and then clinched a SCIAC Tournament bid with an 8-1 win over the Panthers in the nightcap on Saturday at Athena Field.
Chapman took the opening game 3-2, to put some pressure on the Athenas to win the nightcap to qualify, and they came through with the 8-1 win. With the split, CMS now stands at 20-14 overall and 11-10 in the SCIAC, earning it the fourth seed in the league tournament. Chapman will be the No. 2 seed after moving to 27-8 overall and 15-6 in league play.
Seniors
Kaili Aqui,
Madison Gonzalez,
Sophia Nguyen,
Emma Suh and
Maya Weigel-Murphy were honored prior to the contest for the Senior Day, and extended their careers with the win in the finale.
Suh had an inside-the-park homer in the first game to cut a Chapman lead to 3-2 in the sixth, and the Athenas had the tying run on third with one out in the seventh, but a line drive from
Giselle Lai was caught at first by Jordan Westerfield and the Panthers were able to hold in.
In the nightcap, the Athenas trailed 1-0 in the third, but
Alex Wedemeyer had a clutch two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to put CMS ahead 2-1. In the fourth,
Delanie Stevens had a three-run inside the park homer to stretch the lead to 5-1, and Aqui followed with a triple and came home on an RBI single from Suh. After
Sophia Nguyen had a bunt single, Suh came home on a wild pitch and Wedemeyer had another RBI single to make it 8-1.
Weigel-Murphy went the distance to get the win in the circle for the Athenas, allowing just four hits. Wedemeyer finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Aqui was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
CMS will be the No. 4 seed in the SCIAC Tournament and will open against top-seeded Redlands on Friday.
