Athenas Water Polo Advances to National Finals with 14-5 Win over Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Isabel Del Villar had two goals and two assists, and four other Athenas had two goals, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team defeated Augustana 14-5 to advance to the national championship match of the USA Water Polo Division III Tournament on Saturday.

CMS will take on Pomona-Pitzer for the national title for the third year in a row, which will take place tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific time).

The Athenas took a little while to click, holding just a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter after goals from Jordan LaCour and Grace Clark, but then they scored seven times in the second quarter to take command. Caitlin Muñoz had two goals in a row to start the spurt and put CMS up 4-1, and Del Villar netted her first to make it 5-1.

Elise Power then scored two goals 52 seconds apart to put the Athenas ahead 8-3 heading into the break, and Valerie Wraith scored her second with 14 seconds left to make it 9-3 going into halftime.

Clark scored her second goal 20 seconds into the second half to stretch the lead to 10-3, and Del Villar added her second to make it 11-3. Jasmine Tang, Fiona Murphy and Tatum Dwyer added second-half goals for CMS.

Muñoz had four steals for CMS, while Murphy, Clark and Del Villar each had three. Mason Spencer had two saves in the first half and Natalie Stearns had one in the second half, as the Athenas defense kept Augustana scoring chances to a minimum.

The Athenas will hope to turn the tables in its rivalry with Pomona-Pitzer after coming close on numerous occasions. Two years ago, the teams met at Augustana and went to overtime, with the Sagehens prevailing 14-13 in a thriller.
