LA VERNE, Calif. - Logan Reese singled in the bottom of the 11th inning to break a 10-10 tie and give the top-seeded La Verne baseball team an 11-10 win over third-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday in a winner's bracket game at Ben Hines Field.
CMS falls to 31-11 on the season and will next play Pomona-Pitzer in an elimination game on Saturday, after the Sagehens stayed alive with a 4-2 win over Redlands on Friday. The Stags opened with a 12-10 win over Pomona-Pitzer yesterday, while La Verne defeated Redlands 4-3.
La Verne improves to 33-8 with the win, and will await the CMS vs. Pomona-Pitzer winner on Saturday afternoon. The Stags will need to win twice tomorrow, and then defeat La Verne in an additional game on Sunday in order to win their first-ever SCIAC Tournament title.
Bryce Didrickson forced the extra innings with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to level the score at 10-10.
Dillon Martin and
Alex Henderson were hit by pitches to put two runners on, and
Andrew Mazzone was walked for the fifth time (the first four of which were intentional) to load the bases. Didrickson's fly ball to left was deep enough to score a run and advance Henderson to third, but the Leopards were able to turn a double play to keep the Stags from taking the lead, and finally ended it on Reese's walkoff single.
CMS trailed 8-6 in the eighth before rallying with three runs. Martin led off with a single and went to third on a double from Henderson. After Mazzone was intentionally walked, Didrickson hit a two-run double to tie it 8-8.
Rider Gordon and
Keegan Cabrera drew walks, with Cabrera forcing home the go-ahead run, but La Verne was able to escape with no further damage, and took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Stags went ahead 5-2 with five runs in the fifth. Didrickson tied it with a single to left, and Gordon followed with a two-run double, before eventually coming home on a balk. La Verne responded with five runs in the bottom half, and held the lead until the eighth.
Didrickson finished 2-for-5 with four RBI, while Mazzone was 1-for-1 with five walks. Gordon and Henderson were each 2-for-4, while Martin was 2-for-5. The Stags drew 13 walks as a team for the second straight game, after also earning 13 free passes yesterday against Pomona-Pitzer.
CMS and Pomona-Pitzer will meet tomorrow for the fifth time this season, with each team winning twice so far.
