CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior guard
Will Householter scored a career-high 32 points on 10-16 shooting to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team to a 77-64 home win over Chapman on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
With the win, CMS improves to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in the SCIAC, moving within one win of the best start in program history (15-0 by the 2011-12 team), while also remaining the only undefeated team in SCIAC play. Chapman slips to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in conference with the loss.
Reid Jones added 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while sophomore guard
Nathan Noronha also had a career-high 10 points off the bench.
Householter had 19 of his points in the second half, as CMS was able to hold off the Panthers, stretching out a 38-33 halftime margin to a 13-point final margin.
The Stags led by just two with 13 minutes to go (50-48), before a 10-0 run helped give them control, with Noronha and Householter each scoring five in the stretch. The Stags maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way, with Jones giving CMS its largest lead at 71-55 with 3:36 to go.
The Stags shot 51.0 percent for the game (51.0) and held Chapman to just 36.4 percent shooting at the other end.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it tries to match the best start in school history with a 4 p.m. road game at Cal Lutheran.
