Stags Basketball Earns 73-63 Win in Sixth Street Rivalry Game

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Will Householter had 12 straight CMS points down the stretch to hold off a hot-shooting effort from Pomona-Pitzer as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team earned a 73-63 win over the Sagehens on Saturday evening at Roberts Pavilion. 

The win improves CMS to 17-1 on the season, bouncing back from its first loss on Wednesday at Redlands in overtime. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the SCIAC with the loss. 

The Stags led by 11 early in the second half, before Pomona-Pitzer came all the way back to within two points at 49-47 with 13:35 left. Nathan Noronha stemmed the tide with two straight jumpers, Householter hit a jumper and Luke Jacobson finished off an 8-0 run with a jumper in the paint to make it a 57-47 game with 8:03 to go. 

The Sagehens got back to within five points at 59-54 with 4:56 to go, and Householter scored seven straight CMS points to get the lead back up to 10 at 66-56 on a three-point play with 2:32 left.

After Pomona-Pitzer again cut the lead to five at 66-61 with 1:59 to go, Householter hit a jumper in the paint and then buried a three-pointer with 1:15 left to restore the 10-point lead and the Stags were able to finish off the win on a Cahal Connolly dunk to make the final 73-63.

Connolly finished with a double-double for CMS with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Joey Kennedy had nine points, nine rebounds and five assists. Brady Karich added nine assists and one turnover on the day from his point guard spot. 

Pomona-Pitzer stayed in the game by knocking down 15 three-pointers in 30 attempts, including 11-20 in the first half, accounting for all of the team's field goals.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it plays at La Verne at 7 p.m.
