Stags Basketball Breaks 100 at Caltech, Moves to 12-0 with 102-68 Win

PASADENA, Calif. - Will Householter had 28 points and Cahal Connolly added 20 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team moved to 12-0 on the season with a 102-68 win at Caltech on Saturday. 

CMS now stands just three shy of the best start in school history, which came with the 2011-12 team opened the year 15-0, and also moves to 3-0 in league play this season. Caltech slips to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the SCIAC.

Reid Jones added 14 points and Joey Kennedy had 10, while Luke Jacobson finished with nine and Roman Benedetti chipped in with five on 2-2 shooting in the closing minutes, including the three-pointer that gave the Stags 100.

CMS roared out to a 56-27 lead at the half and was able to coast throughout the second to get the league win. Caltech scored first and was within 18-10 with 14:19 left in the half, before CMS rattled off 10 points in a row on baskets from five different players as Householter, James Frye, Kennedy, Connolly and Jones scored in succession to make the score 28-10. 

Householter hit a three-pointer and a fastbreak lay-up to stretch the lead to 52-23 and Frye gave the Stags their largest lead of the half at 56-25 with 33 seconds left in the half. 

Caltech rallied in the second half to get within 19 points at 68-49, but Jacobson responded with the next five points and Jones added a layup on a fast break to make it 75-49. 

Householter shot 12-17 on his way to 28 points, while Connolly shot 8-12. As a team, CMS was 43-79 from the floor on the game (54.4 percent). 

The Stags will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest.
