CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior
Sun Young Byun celebrated her Senior Day by breaking the CMS record in the 100-yard butterfly with a 54.68 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team won every event on its way to a 245-45 win over Redlands on Saturday in its final regular season home meet.
Byun joined fellow seniors
Madeleine Kan,
Mackenzie Mayfield,
Ally Rudolph,
Annika Sharma and
Katy Shaw in being honored before the meet. Byun, Mayfield, Sharma and Kan capped off the meet by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay as an all-senior team in 3:33.12.
Byun came into the meet just .02 off the record of 54.76 held by Katelyn Dang, and was able surpass the mark with a 54.68 for one of her two individual wins and four total wins. She also added a win in the 200 fly in 2:03.07 and contributed to a medley relay win to start the meet (along with Sharma, Kan and first-year
Elyse Newlands).
Mayfield was the winner in the 100 breast in 1:05.56, and took the win in the 200 IM in 2:09.94. Sharma edged out Kan by just .01 in the 50 free (24.28 to 24.29) and in the 100 free (52.63 to 52.84) as the two seniors went 1-2.
Shaw won the 500 free in 5:04.31 and took second in the 200 free behind
Avalon Sanders, as the senior class combined for seven individual wins.
Simone Sabeeh won both diving events, taking first in the one-meter with a 321.95 to edge
Meilan Uyeno in second with 311.75 and
Josie Kearns coming in third with 314.65. She also won the three-meter dive with a score of 359.00, also with Uyeno second and
Josie Kearns third.
Revere Schmidt added a win in the 1000 free in 10:40.96, with
Louisa Lungershausen second and
Kyra Burns third.
Caitlin Kuhlmann took first in the 100 back in 1:01.12, with
Nika Makhervaks winning the 200 back in 2:09.35. Newlands was the winner in the 200 breast in 2:26.16, with Schmidt coming in second.
CMS will be back in action next weekend for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, its final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships in two weeks.
