CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team took the first four singles decisions in straight sets after dropping the doubles point and earned a 5-2 win over No. 14 Amherst on Wednesday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS moves to 10-1 on the year and remains undefeated against Division III competition, while Amherst slips to 3-3 with the loss.
The Athenas fell behind 1-0 after doubles, despite a win from
Lindsay Eisenman and
Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne at No. 1.
Rebecca Kong quickly leveled the match in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2, followed closely by
Leah Baroudi with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne then brought the momentum fully on the Athena side when she flipped her match at No. 6, coming back from 5-2 down in the first by winning 11 games in a row and taking a 7-5, 6-0 win to put the Athenas ahead 3-1.
Bell Zhou then finished off the clinch by winning the final four games in the second set after being down 3-2, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. After the Mammoths won a three-setter at No. 1,
Ananya Sriniketh made it a 5-2 final by fighting off two match points in a third-set tiebreaker down 9-7, for a 5-7, 6-2, 11-9 win at No. 3.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts No. 3 Chicago for a 10 a.m. match.
